Learning Business Strategies From Madonna

Yes, Madonna! She is our Queen of Pop whose musical career lasts for almost 5 decades in her life. Although she is not as energetic as her in her first debut, she has been proved that she can survive from this music industry. Thank her strategies, she keeps shine bright like a diamond and adapts what the industry demand all the time. I will tell you how she still becomes a monster in the music industry.
- She always innovates.
I always get amazed by the way she does the concert. She tends to play her hit songs but not just play them like the time when they boomed the music industry. She always puts something different in her performance on every tour. Either the music instruments change significantly or she uses another way to perform those songs. For example, you can see the “Vogue” song. In the 1990s era, she played this song with classical dance style as seen as in MTV Award 1990. In the 2000s era, especially in her Sticky and Sweet Tour, she performed this song with “4 Minutes” musical instrument and danced differently from the 1990s era. Need another example? Take a look at Hung Up songs (which is one of my favorite songs that she created). When Madonna played this song as it hit the chart (2005 if I’m not mistaken), she used this song as a dance anthem with her iconic move. Shockingly, in her Sticky and Sweet tour, she chose to perform Hung Up using electric guitar rather than using it as a dance anthem. Not only produced a guitar version for her song, but she also performed it with a brand new instrument. In a bottom line, she keeps innovates the song that she created but she still puts the root of her song (I easily find the original version of her song although she tries to hide it) to attract her fans to watch the concert.
As a business player, we need to innovate something new to add to make our product survive from competition among the others. But do not even try to diminish our originality.
2. She is good at adaptation.
She does not hesitate to collaborate with another artist that younger than her while other legendary singers keep staying at their comfort zones. Here are some examples of her collaborative music.
- B*tch I’m Madonna (She had a duet with Nicki Minaj).
- 4 Minutes (She collaborated with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland).
- Medellin (She partnered with Maluma).
As long as I know, the singer usually has a duet to gain popularity, reach another type of listener, and adapt with a recent musical style. A duet can be complicated because both or all of the singers must meet another or other styles of music. However, the final product of this collaboration usually matches the listeners’ demand from both sides of artists that participate.
Adaptation is a must to meet market demand. Although it is hard to do, it will give a good response from the market. Do not get over the moon just like a brand of a cell phone!
3. She does not want to lose.
Take a look at her performance recently, although she reaches age 60s, she keeps energetic and dances agilely. She also intends to put all of her effort to entertain her fans. I know that her voice is not as graceful as Mariah Carey or Celine Dion, but her dance moves and dance style greatly compensate her imperfectness. Also do not forget her guitar skills, she also kills it when she plays guitar. With her mad genius mind of musical instruments, all of those abilities lure her “old” fans and “young” brand new fans to keep those eyes to her. To proof her business strategies, pay attention to her concert. Almost all of her tickets sold out and you will always see that there is no empty seat every time she does a full-length concert.
As we know in business, we have to keep thinking to know what the consumers want. If you’ve already known what consumers need, you have to keep the focus on that thing. From this thing, you can elaborate on that thing in every product that you will create.
4. She is a legendary marketer
Even though in her career, she got a lot of controversies, she always understands how to use them as a weapon to boost her career. She wrote “Human Nature” song to shut down the controversy that she earned at that moment. Though this song contains sexiness in its lyric, it hit the chart at that time. She also promotes her sexiness to reach her audience and spots in media. Take a look at the same songs as I mentioned before. In the 2010s era, she played this song sexily because she took off almost all of her clothes and leaving corset, bra, and pant in her body. If you focus on her ability to reach the audience, you will find that Madonna brilliantly uses what her body offers to “sell” her.
Marketing plays a significant in business. Use the strategy that you have to reach the audience. If you brave and smart enough, you will find a way to convert your disability into a powerful strategy to boost your business.
All in all, do you get an or insight(s) from this legendary entertainer?
